How Sleep and Emotions Affect Our Eating Patterns
Today, I have the great pleasure of being the host on Day 1 of Drs. Joy and Roy Martina‘s Virtual Blog Tour. Their new book Sleep your Fat Away: Train Your Brain to Lose Weight Effortlessly is celebrating its official launch on Tuesday April 21st, 2015.
Drs. Joy and Roy Martina are amongst the world’s leaders in helping people get back into their power. Between them, they have published over 70 books (translated into more than 10 languages) and have trained hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Their passion for natural approaches to health, longevity, and fitness has led them to write their book Sleep Your Fat Away.
Today, I’d like to share with you a recent interview I had with Joy and Roy on how other things in our life – like sleep, emotions, and life commitments – impact the way we eat.
A lot has been written about the significance of sleep as it relates to weight loss – and how emotional eating affects our diet. But is it possible to train our brain to lose weight effortlessly through sleep?
Here’s what Joy and Roy have to say about “sleeping your fat away.”
***************
TINA: As a life coach, I invite my clients to look at all aspects of their life to identify what is needed to bring it into balance. From a health perspective, how important is sleep to maintaining a healthy weight – and what do you consider a “good night’s sleep?”
JOY and ROY: Research has shown that people who sleep less than 0.5 hours a night have a 50% higher risk of being obese. Compared to the 50’s we are today getting around 1.5 hours less sleep. A lack of sleep affects our brain in many ways – as it needs sleep to “clean up”, promote creativity and much more. When our brain gets tired, it craves stimulants to keep it awake: caffeine, sugar, alcohol… and we tend to snack more, especially on refined carbohydrates, which are not the best choice for healthy weight management. Sufficient sleep is mandatory for a healthy immune system, metabolism and emotional state – and all of these influence our weight! A good night’s sleep is one that you awake from feeling energized, refreshed and ready to go.
TINA: Knowing that life is always ebbing and flowing, influencing how we may feel about ourselves from day to day, how do our emotions affect our eating patterns?
JOY and ROY: Most of us have learnt to use food as a way of managing our “negative” emotions. We are constantly surrounded by an omnipresence of food – sugar laden snacks are ready to go wherever you go! This makes it easy for us to grab for the doughnut when we feel sad, depressed, bored – instead of dealing with what is actually going on. In SYFA we show our clients simple techniques to step out of the vicious cycle of deprivation, starvation and emotional hunger with binge eating.
TINA: When we find ourselves overwhelmed with life commitments – or when things begin to get a little rocky, what’s one thing you can recommend to help us keep our sleeping and eating patterns on track?
JOY and ROY: Breathe! Move! 🙂
The more overwhelmed we are, the more we need to learn to step out of the frenzy and re-center ourselves. I admit to being a prime suspect myself for falling for the trap and going even faster/working even harder when then workload gets crazy. But I learnt the hard way how essential it is to stop the craze by taking a moment to take some deep breaths, go for a little walk, meditate, practice yoga… especially when I am very busy. Just like in the saying: You should meditate every day for 20 minutes – unless you are busy, then you should meditate for an hour 😉
It’s vital to find ways to de-stress BEFORE we go to bed. We use the Emotional Balance Techniques we also show in our program to release the body of stress and have found the nightly brain training programs to be very effective in helping erase destructive behavior patterns and increase the regenerative power of sleep.

I don’t have a weight issue, but the focus on sleep and emotional eating sounds interesting!

Very interesting interview, Tina. Given the epidemic of obesity in our country, this is a very timely read, too.

This is right down my alley Tina, as sleep is one of my favorite pass time activities. I NEED a minimum of at least eight hours each night. I know that about me, and if I don’t get it, I can’t get too far behind before I know I’m out of balance. Thanks for sharing this reminder; my body appreciates it.

This is a great blog post Tina, sleep is so vital to our overall health and it is very interesting to note how it affects our eating habits. I feel we can learn more also from learning from nature.
