We’ve all heard the saying, “the man in the moon.” But what exactly does that mean? By using analogies related to the moon, what emerges after the “new moon” (the darkness of being in the raw) is the first crescent – a peek at what’s to come. A “new you” begins to emerge as life’s many layers are slowly peeled off – and we begin to see the brightness shining from underneath all the rubble. This is our inner light. All of a sudden, we become that woman in the moon – a woman with a very unique face, a face that we can call our own. As we approach another new moon phase, I’m reminded of the gifts that come to us through the mystery of life’s darker moments. American poet Mary Oliver once wrote, “Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.” It brings to our awareness the potential that darkness has in shedding light on life’s lessons and the many gifts that would otherwise go unnoticed. When most of us think of journal writing, we picture ourselves sitting in a big, comfy chair by a window in a coffee shop.
