The Gifts of the Dark Moon

border nine aAs we approach another new moon phase, I’m reminded of the gifts that come to us through the mystery of life’s darker moments.

American poet Mary Oliver once wrote, “Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.”

It brings to our awareness the potential that darkness has in shedding light on life’s lessons and the many gifts that would otherwise go unnoticed.

The darkness of the moon brings an opportunity to reflect on our life’s journey by taking a closer look at who we are – underneath the layers of life. It’s a time to turn within and write about our innermost thoughts and feelings.

It’s a time to ponder where we’ve been, how we got to where we are now – and where to go from here. It’s an opportunity to explore new ways of thinking and to prepare for a new path of travel. It also marks an ideal time to go beneath the layers of who we are on the outside, connecting deeply with those parts of us that aren’t as visible to the outside world.

The new moon phase is a perfect time to embrace a new beginning – even if it feels uncertain.

It’s an invitation to go within the depths of our soul to uncover hidden desires and dreams that have been pushed away by fear, breathing new life into something that “could have been.”

The energies of the dark moon can feel especially potent. That’s because they are.

They represent the unknown and can send a magnetic pull to lure our willingness and our desire to find out – “What is the gift in this darkness that is waiting to be discovered by me?”

Box of Darkness

The first step toward this phase of new beginnings is the realization that there is a gift in everything IF we choose to see it.

It’s a perfect opportunity to make a new discovery about yourself as you contemplate the next evolution of YOU.

During this new moon phase, allow yourself to reflect on a difficult time in your life – one that brought a myriad of challenges and a lot of growing pains.

From this current point in time, looking back on this period, what do you think the gifts were?

What did you learn from this experience – and how did it help you grow and expand into the person you are today?

Take some time to write about this experience from the eyes of a much wiser self. Give yourself the gift of wisdom by noticing what this darkness gave to you.

How did it alter your path at the time? And more importantly, how did it inspire a new beginning for you?

This is at the root of the work I facilitate in my New Moon Wisdom Circle. Through a rich exploration of lunar cycles and astrological influences, we create new beginnings that are inspired by truth and authenticity.

If you’re ready to explore the depths of your own possibilities in a unique and creative way, come join me for a magical experience as we tap into the wisdom of our lunar goddess and immerse ourselves in the art of  journal writing.

Beautiful post Tina, like always! 🙂 I love how you invite us to see the positive, the gifts in every challenge. It is so true, we just have to be open to see the gifts and the infinite possibilities that can unfold ahead of us. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Tina – Thank you for reminding me that there is a GIFT in everything. I have been on an exploration this past month, blazing a trail as I explore new ways of thinking and as you illuminated for me, as a way to prepare for a new path of travel and to be able to be open to receive the gifts that unfold before me 🙂

Looking back, I’d say the life skills and lessons learned have largely come from the dark times, not the light times. Now if we can all just embrace the dark times as the wisdom-creators and guides they are, life would be so much more pleasant!

We are so programmed to think of the darkness and the shadows as something bad or negative. Yet as I look back over my own life I certainly can see the gifts that came from the dark times. Thanks for the reminder that there is goodness in the darkness. Certainly without it, we wouldn’t know light.

Reflection is such an important part of spiritual growth. Anyone going through a spiritual growth spurt, as I like to call them, will benefit from the wisdom and insight you share from following the lunar phases. I just love the quote from Mary Oliver. I’ll remember to accept those gifts more wilingly going forward. 🙂
