How Darkness Can Inspire Your Creativity

Are you going through a difficult time, unsure of your next steps – or contemplating a change in direction with no idea of how to move forward?

Do you feel stuck in your creative process, wondering how to best express yourself as you transition into the next phase of life?

We’ll soon be moving into another new moon phase – which always brings a time of new beginnings. Where one door closes, another one opens.

During a new moon phase, the sky is completely black, other than the surrounding stars. It’s the point in every month when the moon takes a retreat and begins to grow again, redoubling her light and reflecting new creative energy on the world.

It brings to our awareness the potential that darkness has in shedding light on life’s lessons and the many gifts that would otherwise go unnoticed.

As poet Mary Oliver once wrote, “Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.”

The energies of the dark moon can feel especially potent. That’s because they are. They represent the unknown and can send a magnetic pull to lure our willingness and our desire to find out – “What is the gift in this darkness that is waiting to be discovered by me?”

The darkness of the moon brings an opportunity to reflect on our life’s journey by taking a closer look at who we are – underneath the layers of life. It’s a time to turn within and write about our inner thoughts and feelings.

By looking for the “light” – and knowing that it’s there, somewhere, waiting to be discovered – we can reach a place where our personal reflection begins to shed its own light and new creative paths start to emerge.

It’s a time to ponder where we’ve been, how we got to where we are now, and where to go from here. It’s an opportunity to explore new ways of thinking and to prepare for a new path of travel. It also marks an ideal time for connecting with our inner selves and our true heart’s desire.

This is a period where dots start to connect and patterns start to reveal themselves – just as the stars do in the night sky. Everything has a place and everything has a purpose. Now it becomes our job to find our place in the next phase of life’s journey.

And the first step toward this new phase is the realization that there is a gift in everything IF we choose to see it.

It’s a perfect time for making a new discovery about yourself as you contemplate the next evolution of YOU – and how this wants to be creatively expressed in a new way.

Join me on Thursday, September 21st – for a special new moon dialogue with fellow creative luminary, Gunhild Lorenzen as part of the Harness Your Creative Power video summit. Tina, this article was super helpful and also freeing! I have heard so much about the new moon phase but didn’t really get it – now I have a better understanding! I think the darkness in my life has been a great teacher. When you said “It brings to our awareness the potential that darkness has in shedding light on life’s lessons and the many gifts that would otherwise go unnoticed” it really drives home the need to watch my energy around those “dark nights”. If I can remain open to everything being a lesson for my higher good, perhaps the darkness won’t seem so scary.
    Thank you again, Tina!!

    Dear Tina,
Thank you so much for helping me to remember that there are gifts in the darkness….and that the darkness can symbolize a new beginning. There have been many changes in my life over the course of the last two years. Both darkness and light have shown themselves to me. Upon reflection, and though not always pretty, I am grateful for the beauty and grace with which I moved through all of it, knowing that I did my best to stay in integrity, good character and honor to the best of my ability. Thanks so much for sharing your words of wisdom!

That was really insightful Tina and gave me more appreciation for the new moon…I always set intentions during this time but finding the gift in the darkness is a beautiful thought and one that I will explore further. I have always loved the full moon but now feel a deeper connection/understanding with the new moon. 🙂

Great explanation of the new moon phase Tina. I especially like the quote “Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this, too, was a gift.” I came to discover it’s powers of the moon a few years ago and now make it a ritual to absorb its energy; I call it “Vitamin Moon”. Wishing you great success with the summit.
