Are You on a “Caterpillar to Butterfly” Journey?

On a recent walk along one of my favorite Cape Cod nature trails, I noticed a butterfly crossing my path. It stayed with me for a few minutes, eventually landing on a gorgeous pink azalea that had just bloomed.

I began thinking about this butterfly – and the transformation it had taken to become one. It reminded me of a favorite quote by beloved poet Maya Angelou.

“We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.”

Butterfly - Beauty

Every great transformation – whether personal, professional or creative – involves a process that isn’t always pleasant. There are many twists and turns, lots of creating and adjusting, and a necessary willingness to see it all through.

It’s a unique journey that can be described metaphorically, “from caterpillar to butterfly.”

And at the end of this metamorphosis, we usually discover that it’s all worth it – when we can see the fruits of our labor and the beautiful new wings that we’ve created for ourselves.

Of course, this discovery doesn’t come without a few bumps and bruises along the way. Sometimes we have to travel on a difficult path just to get to the other side.

  • What big change are you currently experiencing?
  • What great transformation is just over the horizon for you?
  • What parts of your life are breaking down – in order for new developments to come through?
  • And where does it feel a little painful and messy?

Transformation is inevitable throughout several stages in life and often takes courage and faith to follow through. And as you’ve stated, it’s usually all worth it. Love your quote.

It is so important to remember that with each big transformation comes pain and challenge and unsurety. Not knowing what will be coming forth adds to the difficulty. It is helpful to think about the importance of trusting the process and knowing that the Universe always leads to good.

This is a good reminder for me when I meet highly successful happy, energetic people to think about the journey they’ve taken to become a butterfly. It doesn’t happen overnight and the ultimate reward IS in the journey. Thanks for posting Tina! Great insights and your retreat sounds awesome! Have fun!

I love this metaphor, Tina. I was recently thinking about how the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly is the game-changer for the caterpillar. It’s that game-changing moment that the butterfly looks back on and says “I’m so glad I went through what I had to go through in order to be who I am today.”
